Branch #79 Reports for Year 2007
Branch Membership Report
For: General Meeting Date: May 1, 2008
REPORT:
It has been a busy year for membership. I have added 53 members to our list, which currently shows a total of 365 with approximately 325 paid up to 2008. I also have a list of 24 members from Clive that may be transferring to our Branch. I will be contacting them this month to fill out Transfer forms.
I have also been busy creating a new database for the membership as well as other computer systems for recording dues receipts and payments of Per Capita Tax to Dominion Command.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my committee: Cheryl Swarbrick whose knowledge of members provides such valuable information to the Membership Chairman; Robin Smith who has been learning the current systems and procedures and is willing to assist the next Membership Chairman; Susan Fisher who stepped in when I was unable to be present and Val Brimacombe and Stephanie Fisher for their assistance on November 11th. Last, but not least, I would like to thank the members of Branch 79 for their patience and confidence in me. It has been a pleasure to serve you.
I MOVE that we accept the following applications for membership:
NEW:
Associate Floyd Bradshaw
Associate Michelle Green
TRANSFERS:
Life Member Evans Carson
Ordinary Robert Armstrong
Ordinary R. Cameron
Associate Jim Parsons

Respectfully submitted,
Membership chairman
Bernice Daze

Remembrance/Social/Archive

This had been a very eventful year. Our monthly breakfasts that began on January 16, 2006 are still going strong. Thanks to the volunteers who help faithfully to make this happen. With these funds we purchased a few kitchen items, book shelves for the games room, sandwich board to advertise functions and more . . . ! Thanks to all who supported our breakfasts.
As Lacombe Legion Branch #79 archivist I have been working on the past-Presidents pictures from both Branch and Auxiliary to be displayed in the main hall. Also, we are preparing the 3d section of pictures displaying local service veterans; both men and women. If you were in the service and your picture is not up on the south wall please bring to me.
The committee consisting of Tom Morrow, Al Walushka and Barbara Burnett is still working with Veterans Affairs Canada’s assistance in restoring the Field of Honour. Some headstones need repairs; some are missing and others are unreadable. We are still waiting for VAC to review the restoration of the Field of Honour. Hopefully, they will come to Lacombe this year.
As Social Committee chair this year, it was a pleasure to organize the events. We had a bus trip to a few historical sites in Central Alberta with a dinner being served to us by the Innisfail Legion Branch #104.
Thank you, Innisfail Branch!
An open house for the public was held in October for Remembrance Week. Several veterans were present to talk and answer questions.
A President Dinner was held–we invited all past-Presidents of the Branch and Ladies Auxiliary. It was very successful.
An authentic Irish Dinner complete with the Red Deer Irish Dancers and a group of five entertainers from Lacombe completed the evening. My committee, Val & Jim Brimacombe, Sharon Pollard and Fay Chomoway did a bang up job on the Dinner Theatre again this year. Vimy night was held in conjunction with the Ladies Auxiliary with about 70 members and guests attending.
A Branch committee is working with LCHS teacher Corbin Urbach, on the “Lest We Forget” brick wall. Known local service persons who gave the supreme sacrifice will be commemorated on this wall. It is located in the front entrance of the high school. Posters I ordered from Veterans Affairs Canada have been mounted on wood and laminated to line a portion of the hall in one section of the school. A special thank you is offered to Mr. Urbach for educating both students and the community through his remembrance initiative.
I thank all those that have helped me with my various projects.
Without volunteers we would have no Legion!

Respectfully submitted,
1st vice-President
Barbara Burnett

Ladies Auxiliary

Ladies Auxiliary serving veterans dinner 2007 was another busy year for our Lacombe Branch Ladies Auxiliary.
We welcome the Clive Ladies Auxiliary who have joined the Lacombe Branch.
The Lacombe Ladies Auxiliary entertain the residents of the Lacombe Seniors Lodge with Bingo games five times during the year. We served goodies and coffee as well as giving out prizes. Bingo and birthday parties at the Nursing Home is another service we provide our seniors.
We served lunches for over 14 funerals and convened several dinners.
A special dinner and entertainment was held for the veterans from the Lacombe area.
We also help during Seniors Week with the different functions that are going on around town.
We finance 'Handi-van' travel costs for seniors attending various functions within the Lacombe area.
Several members attended the District Rally as well as the Convention in Grande Prairie.
We provided 75 gift packages for the residents at the Nursing Home at Christmas time.
Our cash donations to Command and Community organizations totaled over $3,000.00.
Joyce Hunt and Isabel Dermott received their Life Membership.
Congratulations to Marg Simpson and Vera Brick for their 60 years of community service as members of the Ladies Auxiliary.
We sadly miss two of our members who passed away this year – Ellen Schilling and Mary Slaght.
The number of active members is getting smaller and smaller. Health difficulties is a major concern.

An influx of ladies would be of great benefit to the Legion and the community!

Respectfully submitted,
immediate past-President
Joan Robak
